Book Review of Treasure Island

"Treasure Island" is an adventure novel written by Robert Louis. It tells the story of a ten-year-old boy named Jim whose parents ran a hotel near the bay in Montenegro. One day, a guest with a scar on his face came to the hotel. His name is Bill, used to be the mate of the famous pirate Flint. Jim was attracted by Bill’s sailing experiences and looked forward to sailing. A few months later, former crews of Flint found Bill and asked him for Flint’s treasure map. Bill was scared and died. Jim got the treasure map by chance and decided to sail for the treasure together with Dr. Livesey. But Flint’s crews didn’t give up and they disguised themselves as sailors boarding the ship. Led by Silver, pirates conspired to rob the treasure and kill everyone on the ship. Jim happened to find the conspiracy of pirates and warn the companions. Jim, Captain Smollett, Dr. Livesey, the squire, and their companions fought with pirates on the treasure island and finally won the treasure.

Control of greedy desires, life, and loyalty, and faith are more important than money. The story revolves around the gold that a pirate, Captain Flint, buried. This secret caused big troubles among his crew members, especially between Billy Bones and Long John Silver. It is no exaggeration to say that every pirate who knows the treasure has his own selfish and greedy desire to get the treasure. Bill has hidden the treasure map even if he has no ability to obtain the treasure. His greed makes him unwilling to give up the map. At last, he was scared and died. Other pirates such as John Silver were overwhelmed by the treasure, and many ended up killing each other. Those characters, led by their greed, face disastrous ends. On the contrary, Jim chose to go to Treasure Island purely to experience sailing and adventure. The most valuable thing is that Jim, Captain Smollett, and Dr. Livesey did not betray each other because of greed, but remained loyal to each other. Even if their pirates took their pirate ship, they did not abandon each other, used their wits to seize the ship together, and finally, returned with treasure. Everyone has a greedy desire, but can't lose his mind. If you lose your life for money, what is the value of money? In other words, don't be too greedy for money. Life and loyalty are more valuable than money.

You become mature when you have the ability to distinguish between good and evil. After Jim got the treasure map by accident, he went to Captain Smollett and Dr. Livesey trusted, and searched for the treasure together. Even when they were in trouble and danger even their ship was taken away by the sinister Silver’s team, Jim did not betray his teammates selfishly but chose trusted sailors to abandon the ship with Captain Smollett and Dr. Livesey, and the brave Jim recaptured the ship at night. He finally defeated Silver on Treasure Island with wisdom and brought back the treasure. Jim can distinguish between good and evil. He never thought of stealing the treasure only by himself but insisted on working with his teammates and being willing to share the treasure. The process of seizing the treasure is also Jim's transformation from a pure and ignorant boy to a mature, loyal, brave, and calm young hero.

Adventure can hone people's will and experience different lives. Treasure Island is certainly an adventure story, Jim grew up and learned to face danger and deal with the crisis calmly. When Jim listened to the adventure story of pirates told by Bill the pirate, he wanted to experience the life of sailing. If Jim doesn't have the spirit of adventure, he may be like his father in his life, and run the inn quietly. If Jim doesn't go exploring, he could never have the exciting sailing experience, nor could he have the chance to fight the insidious and selfish Silver bravely and seize the treasure with the just doctors and sailors. If Jim did not take risks to find treasure, he would not grow up and be independent. Jim adventured bravely and finally could solve problems independently and calmly when the team faced the crisis. Although Jim’s father died at the beginning of the story, he grew up and became mature after a series of adventures. Life needs to be explored bravely, and the chance to win a wonderful life can be obtained by taking appropriate risks.

In conclusion, Treasure Island is an epic adventure: a tale of pirates, treasure, and exploration of an unknown and mysterious island. The story reveals the greedy selfish pirates represented by Silver. Treasure Island can make readers feel the lure of money. Money can change the feelings of people. But I think money itself is innocent. It's just that people with psychological deterioration want to own it, use it, or even control it. Thus, money has become a synonym for evil. On the other hand, Jim's team is not greedy, selfish, and brave in the face of treasure against evil forces. Jim got the treasure map. He was not as greedy and selfish as Bill and wanted to own the treasure alone. Jim successfully distinguished good from evil and chose a kind and loyal team. He has the courage to take risks, loyalty, and teamwork to solve the crisis. The experience of adventure made Jim grow up, mature and become a hero.
