There is a young farm girl named Dorothy. One day, she got swept away by a cyclone, and traveled to the land of Oz. She friends a scarecrow, a tin man, and a cowardly lion. They all want something. Scarecrow wants a brain, the tin man wants a heart, a cowardly lion wants courage, and Dorothy herself wants to go back home. Despite her need to go home, she still offers to help her friends. After defeating the evil witch, she finally noticed she could go home whenever she wanted. Along the way of her journey, she learned about confidence, the good and evil, and friendship which we will be discussing in this review.
Courage is the feeling that we use to face fear, danger. It is essential to overcome self suspect, and to work on courage because that helps with obstacles in life. In the story The Cowardly Lion is an example why we need courage. Although he thinks he doesn’t have any bravery, his actions show that true courage is about overcoming something. When he protects Dorothy, he shows the courage he thought he didn't have. He even says, "I do not believe I am a coward… I am just afraid." This shows that courage is often found in action, not just belief.
People are not born good, or evil, it is their surroundings, and actions that make them change. Bad people are often grown up with fear, and pain. In the story, the Wicked Witch of the West is an example of this idea. She wasn't always evil, she changed because she was angry and jealous after her sister’s death. THis just shows that even feelings can change a person. Just remember that if we ever see a bad person, remember that they are shaped, and not born like that. “Villains are not born, they are made”.
Friendship is an essential part of life, it has support, trust, and also was used by our ancestors to survive. Friends are always next to each-other, from cheering one up, to celebrating one’s success. In the story, Dorothy's relationship with her friends, the Scarecrow, Tinman, and Cowardly Lion is an example of the power of friendship. Each character wants something they believe they don't have, but through their journey together, they realize that they already have the qualities they think they don’t have. Their friendship not only helps them win through obstacles but also allows them to grow and understand their own powers. True friends are never apart, maybe in distance but never in heart.
Family and home are essential to be well raised, and to feel cherished. A strong family provides support, and love which help a lot for facing life's challenges. In the story, Dorothy learns this too. Although she is swept to the magical land of Oz, her main goal still is to return home to Kansas, where she is surrounded by her loved ones. Dorothy's journey shows that no matter how exciting or different new places might seem, the comfort of family and the familiar things of home are first. In the end, she realizes that there’s no place like home. "Family – where life begins, and love never ends.
In conclusion, this is a good story because of how the story teaches us many themes, like courage, good, and evil, friendship, and family, and home. The bad part is because it is a little cruel at the beginning when The Wicked Witch of The East dies. I think that it is not very good to let kids read that. The good benefits are that the themes are all positive like friendship, and home, these themes could help with development and socializing. The book not only teaches young kids about essential lessons, but it is fun for a child to discover all the many adventures they had.
