Book Review of The Whipping Boy

Characters: Prince Brad, Whipping boy, Cutwater, King, Billy

Setting: Home in the castle, in the sewers.

Plot: Prince Brad decides to run away from the castle.

Genre: Children’s book

Perspective: third person view-point

The story The Whipping Boy written by Sid Fleischman talks about a Prince and a Whipping boy. Whenever the prince does something bad, the whipping boy is beaten or whipped on his behalf. Jemmy is the prince's whipping boy, who grew up in poverty. Jemmy resents his job and often wants to leave. However, he takes advantage of his position by learning from the tutors who vainly attempt to teach the prince. They also fooled a kidnapper on their own. Jemmy was the one that knew how to write but he was a Whipping boy. Prince Brat was the one that didn’t know how to write and read.

Friendship is something we all maybe have because we have friends around us that like us and those are real friends. Real friends would always be on our sides. So just like in this novel, Jemmy and the prince were not friends but then, they became best friends and the prince even helped Jemmy escape the palace. They became nice to each other and both of them were a little naughty. They were sometimes different because Jemmy learned to write and to read while the prince learned nothing. Friendship is always the best.

Education helps a lot in our lives and it is just so important to us. Education is the key to changing your life. And just like in the story, the whipping boy took a chance to have the education and he turned more smart. That also made the kidnappers think he was the prince. Education is never too late for us to learn. We could even learn when we are very old, like 90 years old. Education can make our lives change  just by a little education. It could change a lot even though you only learned a little bit.

When we grow up, we might change and everything would start over again. We could even be mean or be really nice. Like in this novel, at the beginning, the prince and Jemmy were enemies but when they grew up a little, the prince knew how much pain Jemmy felt each time he whipped himself. That was his job to wipe others but he whipped himself all these years. As they grew up, they grew closer to each other and officially became best friends and the prince would even help him run away from the castle. When we grow up, everything could change.
