Book Review of The Thirty-Nine Steps -What makes Hannay succeed?

The Thirty-Nine Steps by John Buchan is about a man named Richard Hannay who has just returned from South Africa and made a fortune in the mining business. One day, he meets Franklin Scudder, a spy who was working against a secret organization named the Black Stone trying to spread war all over Europe. Hannay allows Scudder to hide in his flat, but the next day, he finds Scudder dead. The police suspect Hannay to be the murderer, while the Black Stone fears that Hannay knows their secrets, so both try to capture Hannay. Hannay goes through many disguises and hardships, but he never gives up. Eventually, Hannay is able to clear his name and leads a search operation to capture the three German spies trying to obtain information on Britain’s air defenses. Throughout his adventure, Hannay demonstrates a variety of traits that enable him to complete the mission that Scudder had started. For one, he is extremely patriotic, given that he puts the nation’s safety over his own. Second, he uses his skill sets to get out of sticky situations, such as when he used his mining experience to escape from the room he was locked in. Third and finally, he is resilient and refuses to surrender no matter how much he suffers.

Determination and patriotism can motivate people to do great things for their country, even if it might be risky or dangerous. Everybody has to make sacrifices for the team, but a few people accomplish extraordinary deeds and go beyond simply fulfilling their duties. Without a doubt, decoding the notes that Scudder left behind while evading both the police and the German spies was very dangerous. However, the nation’s safety was on the line so Hannay chose to do it anyway. Hannay had to perform several dangerous tasks, like blowing up the room he was locked in while also escaping unscathed, or driving a stolen car into the river while also jumping out. Hannay could have relaxed in his apartment and enjoyed life as a well-off man, but he chose to help the country instead. Because of his contributions, World War 1 was prevented, or at least delayed for some time. He had to go through many hardships that he hadn’t been expecting, but he was willing to do it to save the country. Great countries are forged by people who do more than what they are supposed to do.

Although a good mindset is crucial for accomplishing anything, without skills, we won’t get anywhere in life. A strong work ethic is important, but doesn’t really make us that capable without any experience or knowledge. After Hannay helped Scudder, there was no turning back. He was chased for days and even got locked in a room. However, he was in luck for he found a box of dynamite in the room and blew it up while making it out without any injuries due to his mining experience in South Africa. He was also good with disguises. Throughout the novel, he had to go through at least two different ones, first as a milkman on the way to Scotland, the second as a roadmender after he swapped clothes with a worker named Mr. Turnbull. Without all of his extensive knowledge, Hannay would never have accomplished what he had. While he would never give up, he also needed his skills to get him out of dangerous situations. For example, when he got locked in a room by an old man, he managed to blow up the room due to his experience as a miner. Working hard certainly matters a lot, but we also need to apply our skills to succeed.

Resilience is key to success for anybody, for if you give up, you may have stopped just one step away from accomplishing your goal. If we put in the effort, we will certainly succeed some day. If we quit, then we would have thrown away a vital opportunity, like R. U. Darby’s uncle, who stopped three feet short of gold. When running from the local police and the German spies, Hannay had to face many difficulties. He had to make most of his journeys on foot and often risked starvation. Furthermore, his enemies knew exactly who and where he was. He got chased out of a bar by pursuing German spies and was locked in a room by an old man. Despite this, he kept on running and gained the trust of the government. Had he decided to give up at any point, then Britain would have been completely exposed because the spies would know everything about the British air defenses. However, Hannay was not one of those people who would give up three feet short of success. What really matters in life is how hard we try, not how difficult a challenge is, for if we never give up, no obstacle will really stop us.
