Plot: Ferdinand is stung by a bumble bee, then he was picked to join the bull fight in a ring.
The story of Ferdinand was written by Munro Leaf. It talks about a bull Ferdinand who was different from other bulls. He was a very quiet bull. All he did was sitting under his favorite cork tree, and smell his favorite flower. One day, some men came to pick the most fierce bull to join a bull fight in the ring. Ferdinand sat as usual under the tree. At last, Ferdinand was chosen by the men. However, Ferdinand was chosen not because he was the most violent bull but because he was bit by a bumble bee. Then they take him away to the bull fight. Unfortunately, when Ferdinand arrived at the ring, he sat quietly in the center and just smelled the flowers rather than fight or stick his horns around. No matter how they treated him, Ferdinand sat still, quietly and happily. Finally they can only take home. This is a funny story. But it teaches us some important themes.
First, it is not bad to be different. Everybody has its own brain. We can have different opinions from others, there is no need to be the same as others. In this story, the other bulls fight with each other everyday, but Ferdinand just sits there and smells the flowers. I think this is what Ferdinand really likes. Everyone has its own choices.
Then, it is not good to just follow the majority, we have to think if the majority’s idea is right or wrong. If they are right, we can follow them. But if they were wrong, we should have our own decisions. For example, most of the bulls are easy to fight with each other. But if fighting is not a good thing, why do we have to follow the bad things. Therefore, think it over before you decide to follow someone.
Lastly, keeping different is not easy. It takes a lot of courage. Being different sometimes aroused bullies from others. I think we have to support to those who wish to keep their differences. Most of the people like to keep the same. And they don’t like those who are different. But we have to stop the bullies and tell them to respect the difference. In this way, we helped those who are different to maintain their bravery.
This story is very enjoyable. It seems to talk about a special bull, but in fact, the story teaches us how important it is to insist on our own mind, and not just follow others. When we are different from others, we should have to believe in ourselves. And we will also have to support those who wish to keep their own differences. If everyone is the same, the world is kind of boring!
