The Reluctant Dragon is a fairy tale written by Kenneth Grahame. The main characters are the dragon, the boy, and St. George. It talks about a story of a boy being a friend of the dragon. One day, St. George came to fight with the dragon because the townsfolk said that it was a harmful pest. The dragon was reluctant to fight, so the boy made a clever plan to convince St. George that it was actually peace loving. Finally, St. George and the dragon had a pretend fight and nobody got hurt. Everybody was happy at the end and had a banquet.
We should not judge people by their appearances. The most kind person might have the ugliest face, so what is important is beneath the surface which you cannot see. The reluctant dragon in the book may look scary at first sight, but he actually likes poetry and is friendly towards others. It is a misjudgement made by the townsfolk, which leads to an unnecessary fight between St. George and the dragon. Before we define a person, we should look beyond one’s appearance and find the true character.
We should not be influenced by others’ judgment. Relying too much on others’ judgment will cause bias and make you unable to make your own choice. I feel sorry for St. George because he is made to believe that the dragon is a harmful pest and needs to be removed. He is so relieved at the end of the story that nobody is killed during the fight. Anyone can be turned into a weapon if they only obey what others say. Therefore, we should form our own judgment instead of following others blindly.
We also should not abandon our friendship. Real friends will never leave us alone when things turn out bad or they get some benefits from others. The friendship between the boy and the dragon is genuine and overcomes a lot of challenges. The boy made a clever plan of a pretend combat to resolve the conflict between the dragon and St. George. He even keeps his promise of seeing the dragon home as a true friend. Friendship can make us strong, responsible, and additionally makes our life more exciting and meaningful. Therefore, friendship should always come first in our daily life.
In conclusion, the Reluctant Dragon by Kenneth Grahame is a dramatic yet reflective story. I enjoy all three main characters and their storylines. There are significant morals in the story. For example, we should not judge people by their appearances; we should not be influenced by others’ judgment; we should not abandon our friendship. This is my book review of the Reluctant Dragon.
