Book Review of The Higher Power of Lucky

The Higher Power of Lucky written by Susan Patron is about a young orphan girl named Lucky. Lucky lives with her guardian, Brigitte, in Hard Pan. She finds a dehydrated dog and tries to help it. Lucky meets Paloma, a new girl in town, and they become friends. They attend a Halloween party and meet a boy named Lincoln. Paloma leaves, and Lucky learns about her deceased mother and her father, whom she has never met. She runs away to find her father but gets lost in the desert and is rescued by a search party. Lucky returns home and reconciles with Brigitte. She raises money for her friend with cancer, gets into a fight with another girl, and learns about forgiveness at a 12-step meeting. She and her friends visit a museum to learn about the Paiute Indians, and Lucky reflects on the events of the past year and celebrates her birthday.

Good things and bad things happen to us alike. At some points, there are ups and downs in our life. In the story, Lucky’s mother died and her irresponsible father left her. What’s more, she lived in a poor town without water and soil. Because of this, one might assume that her name Lucky does not reflect her condition at all. Currently, she has hit rock bottom, just like those at the 12-step anonymous meetings. There were gamblers, smokers, alcoholics, and overeaters at the meetings. They had all hit their bottom point, but luckily for them, they found their higher power and it guided them away from their misery, just like Lucky found hers. At first, Lucky lived an extremely unlucky life, but she did at least find her higher power. No life is perfectly terrible or good.

Giving up is not an option in life as we must pursue our dreams until the very end. We must stay optimistic if we want to be truly successful. In the story, the town Hard Pan was lacking in multiple ways. For one, it did not have proper soil for growing crops, so the residents had to rely on the free food provided by the government. Additionally, out of the 43 residents in the small town, some were depressed and started abandoning themselves to alcohol, smoking, overeating, and etc. After all, they could not leave this town because they simply could not afford to travel and even if they could, they had nowhere to go. However, the alcoholics, smokers and the others regained hope because of the 12-step anonymous meetings. We should never give up even during desperate times because hope always dies last.

To be a responsible person, we must complete our obligations and take good care of our families, especially our elders. Those who do not fulfill their duties are irresponsible. In the story, Lucky lived a miserable life. First, her mother died and her father simply abandoned her and occasionally sent small cheques to her current guardian, Brigitte, who was planning to move back to France. It seemed like Brigitte was no better than Lucky’s father at first when Lucky saw the passport. Lucky believed that Brigitte really was going to abandon her. However, it was just a misunderstanding and the passport was actually for adopting Lucky. Brigitte was a better parent than Lucky’s father because of her responsibility. Whether we are responsible or not defines our personality to a great extent.

The Higher Power of Lucky is an award winning novel about an orphan named Lucky set in a poor village called Hard Pan in the Mojave Desert. Lucky’s mother died when she was young, and his father abandoned her, so Lucky’s guardian was Brigitte, Lucky’s father’s former wife. Later on, Brigitte decided to adopt Lucky. From this story, we can derive three themes. First, there are high and low points in our life. Second, we should always remain hopeful and optimistic about the future. FInally, responsibility is a key aspect of our personality.
