Book Review of The Hatchet

American author Gary Paulsen's 1986 young-adult wilderness survival book Hatchet won the Newbery Honor. It is the first of the Hatchet series' five novels. The River (1991), Brian's Winter (1996), Brian's Return (1999), and Brian's Hunt are more books in the series (2003). Brian Robeson is a thirteen-year-old son of divorced parents who travels to visit his father in the oil fields in Northern Canada and must learn to survive on his own with nothing but his windbreaker and hatchet. He develops his survival skills and finds a survival pack with food, an emergency transmitter, and a .22 AR-7 rifle.
