The Cricket in Times Square by George Selden is about a cricket named Chester who accidentally went to New York City. After arriving at Times Square in a picnic basket, Chester friends a wise mouse named Tucker and a pet cat named Harry. Together, they explore the big city, and Chester discovers his power to play beautiful music, which brings joy to everyone around him. This story also taught many lessons like friendship, sense of belonging, understanding, and acceptance, and the power of music which I will all be discussing in this review.
Friendship, it is a relationship we all get in life which we may not even notice. It is one that plays with each-other, helps each-other, and is loyal to each-other. In the story, there are many pairs of friendships, for example: Tucker the cat and Mario. These two teach each-other, and help navigate the city. This shows how important friendship is. Our ancestors also used it too. Not only us humans, animals also use it, elephants, sheep, wolves all have to rely on each-other to live, if one is kicked out, it will not survive the challenges they face. Friendship is what makes the world unique.
A sense of belonging is essential to one’s well-being, as it makes one feel comfort, security, and like they are cared for. When one find a group or place where they feel accepted, they often thrive. In the story, Tucker the cricket finds his sense of belonging in the busy city of New York, surrounded by his new friends, Chester the mouse and Harry the cat. Despite feeling out of place, Tucker soon realizes that he is part of a unique family. No matter if one is from a different place, culture, or look, it is important for them to feel welcomed. "Tucker had never felt so at home anywhere in his life."
Understanding and acceptance are essential for having good relationships and growing in a good environment. When people are accepted for who they are, even of their differences, it shows respect. In the story, Tucker the cricket is new in New York, but his new friends, Chester and Harry, accept him and make him feel like he’s at home’. They accepted him even though he was new in the city and his strange looks. “Chester and Harry didn’t care that Tucker was different... they liked him just the way he was.” This acceptance allows Tucker to feel truly at home.
The power of music can strengthen relationships, connect one and make deep emotions. Music has the power to bring people together, it is everywhere, from parties, to a sleepover, it is what connects this world. In the story, Tucker the cricket uses his beautiful songs to communicate and make bonds with his friends, Chester and Harry. His music make people feel emotions like comfort and joy, especially during difficult times. Music is what glues the world together.
This book is a heartwarming story that highlights friendship, belonging, understanding and acceptance, and the power of music. I like this book because it shows that this world has many good people like Sai Fong who is ready to help one. It is good because it is suitable for every age, there is not many cons about it. I also like the cover because it is nicely illustrated, this is my personal opinion about this book. I recommend you to read this book.
