Book Review of The Alchemist

Jingling

The book The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo is a book about a young boy named Santiago who has been a shepherd his whole life and each year he goes to the market and meets a girl who he likes. This year, he dreamed of a treasure in Egypt and was told to pursue it but didn't. Until a rich man gives him two omen tellers and tells him to pursue his personal legend which was to find the treasure. He sells his sheep to get money to go there but when trying to find a guide, a thief steals all his money. He walks up the hill where there is a crystal shop and he gets a job there doing work and giving suggestions to how they could attract more customers. Over time, he gets enough money to go. He joins a camel caravan with other people and is told in the desert, there's a tribal war in the midst. When they get to an oasis to rest, he falls in love with a young girl and meets an alchemist that helps him get to the pyramids. When he gets there, he is beaten but realizes that the treasure is under a place at home. He goes back and achieves his personal legend. This book explores love, how to realize your personal legend, and how to handle the conflict between dreams and reality.

Achieving your personal legend can be a challenging journey filled with many obstacles. However, you can reach your personal legend by embracing confidence, taking action, staying focused, and integrating your experiences. In the book Santiago didn’t believe in his dreams at first but after he met the rich king, he believed. This shows that you should trust your instincts and follow your destiny while avoiding using societal or others standards to judge your dream. Santiago was one of the few people who actually acted on his dreams. The Englishman studied alchemy but never did any experiments. Santiago worked for a long time until he could go. This required true focus that only showed true alchemists unlike result chasers and talented alchemists. Santiago didn’t immediately go to the pyramids after he got his dreams, he took little steps until he was in the right position to something big. This integration allowed him to manage the balance between action and quality. Focusing on consistency and small steps ensures a strong foundation for success.

Dreams and reality frequently conflict with each other because that is part of life. Even if they conflict with each other, there are ways to handle it to achieve  positive outcomes. Santiago wanted to follow his dreams but didn’t have the resources or knowledge to get to the pyramids. By understanding the conflict, he can work to get what he needs to resolve the problem. The crystal merchant had a dream to go to Mecca but in reality, he was scared he would have no purpose if he got there. The challenge of getting there should be looked at as an opportunity for improvement and a motivation to work towards. A good example of a resolution between dreams and reality is Saint Santiago's situation. He overcomes challenges by adapting and staying determined. Not only did he get the treasure at the end, but during the journey he learned many new things like with the crystal merchant and the englishman. Some strategies to balance dreams and reality are to shift perspective, start small, and overcome fear of change. By following these steps, dreams and reality can coexist in a balanced way where your dream can thrive.

Finding true love can be tough and may get in the way because of other surface-level qualities. What matters more is who you are on the inside rather than how you look on the outside. At first, Santiago loved the merchant's daughter because she looked good and he wanted to meet her every year. This was because he was young and naive so he strived to get her love. Santiago later realized the relationship lacked depth and understanding but this wasn't the reason he left. On the other hand, the girl in the desert oasis was kind and supportive of Santiago and wanted him to achieve his personal legend. Her inner personality was more important than how she looked and Santiago only realized this when he met her. Another example is the popcorn seller who sacrificed his dream to become a shepherd for a stable life and marriage. This represented a love constrained by practicality and social expectations. On the other hand, Santiago strives for love that aligns with his dream. This sort of love is helpful to everyone. Love is part of life and choosing the right person can be difficult but this person will understand your ambition and support your dreams.

The book The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo is an inspirational book about a boy and his quest to treasure. This book teaches us about love, how to realize your personal legend, and how to handle the conflict between dreams and reality. Everyone has their own personal legend but very few achieve it. There are multiple steps to realizing your personal legend like taking actions and not being scared. The conflict between dreams and reality can affect how you think about your personal legend but there are ways to balance them like understanding the nature of the conflict and then resolving it. Finally, While searching for true love, it's easy to get distracted by appearances. Even if you're initially attracted to someone's looks, if they don't understand your dreams or share your values, the relationship may not last. True love should help you understand yourself better and support your aspirations. This book is very captivating and especially teaches us the importance of taking actions towards our dreams.
