Basic elements:

Characters  : Sarah, Caleb, Anna, Jacob

Setting : Home, during the late 19th century.

Plot: Anna and Caleb thought that Sarah will leave them.

Perspective: first person view point.

Genre: Children's book.

The novel Sarah Plain And Tall is written by Patricia MacLachlan, it talks about Jacob, who lost his wife so he gets a new wife by putting advertisements. The new wife named Sarah who comes from Maine, her brother is married so Sarah wants to be married too. Sarah really misses the sea, she is now in a place where there are planes instead of seas. Many things she likes are at her home, now her home is being taken away. Even though she misses the sea, she still is happy enough playing with Anna and Caleb. They do many activities like swimming in the cow pond, drawing pictures to send home to Maine and playing with the chickens that their neighbor Maggie gives them. Sarah is happy to learn how to drive a wagon and that is what she did. She now sometimes will drive to the town. The Witting family does many things for Sarah just to make her stay. After Sarah stays and marries Jacob, they become a new happy family.

Loneliness is a feeling we feel when we need company, there are lots of situations to cause loneliness. We will get lonely in many ways, missing someone can cause loneliness, most loneliness is caused by being alone. In the story, Sarah misses the sea and her home, home is where the heart is. Anna misses her mother, she forgets to say ‘good night’ to her before she dies. Caleb misses her mother too, he will always think of her when he sees other mothers, he did not see her before.Jacob misses her wife, he can not enjoy her singing now. The part of missing someone is also the feeling of loneliness. The writing family all miss something, they all do feel lonely. We all need a family and someone to love to prevent us from getting lonely.

Home is where our heart is, home is not only a house, it’s also where our family is. Home can not be just a house that is comfortable, it is also a place where we can snuggle in our bed and relax sipping a cup of warm coffee with our loved ones. If we leave our home, we will leave our family and make us lonely like Sarah in the story. Sarah leaves her brother William, she leaves the place where she grows up because William is married so Sarah wants to get married too. Now she misses her home, there is the sea and all the things that make her comfortable. Home is a place where our family is instead of just a comfy house, after all, home is where the heart is.

Family is important to all of us but it might change unexpectedly one day. A person in a couple may die so a new family may form. We will all be miserable but there is nothing we can do about it, there is no turning back. In the story, The mother of the Witting family died so the family misses her very much and Jacob wants to get married again. Sarah’s brother is married and Sarah wants to get married too so she goes to the Witting’s house. If there is a change between a family, there is most likely to have a new family. There is nothing we can do, we can’t stop someone’s actions. Even though there may be a change in a family, our lives are still going on normally.

This is a caring story that tells about Jacob's wife who died so Sarah is his new wife. Anna and Caleb have many fun times with Sarah like swimming in the cow pond. This story also tells us useful information: first, loneliness is a feeling we get when we miss someone or we are just alone. Try meeting more people to prevent the loneliness of being alone. Second, Home is where the heart is, our family may be at home. We can be cozy in the bed snoring or we can drink coke while reading a nice book. Third, families may change, we will be sad if they pass away but we should go on with our normal lives like in the old days. There is nothing we can change but getting a new family. This is an excellent story that is very worth reading.
