Book Review of Little Women

Little Women written by Louisa May Alcott, talks about four sisters and their mother Marmee. The four sisters are called Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy. This story happens during World War II. In the book, Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy and their mother were celebrating Christmas. The four sisters were preparing a gift for their mother. They argued for a long time about what they should give to their mother. At last, they decided to each buy a gift for their mother. When their mother came back home, their mother told them that there was a poor family near their home. They didn’t have coal to make them warm and cozy. So, their mother asked them if they wanted to give their breakfast to that family. Her four children were eager to help that family. From this book Amy was selfish and never cared about others, but later on Amy changed her personality into a selfless person.

People in the old times made women have a cap on themselves that doesn’t allow themselves to do many things like men. In the old times, women were known to not work and only men could. Women were like having rules from that time for what they should do and what should not. In the book, people believed that women should do all of the house work and they must be soft, gentle and relying on the male for their own life. But, Jo didn’t believe it. Jo believed that women should be equal. She also thinks that women can rely on themselves. She said this because she wanted to be free from those not fair rules. Jo wanted women to have power in a family, but not listen to their husband. Jo has different opinions with women than others. Women can be independent on their own, but not always relying on the male.

A person who is in poverty can also be rich. A person can be rich from the bottom of their heart. In the first and second chapter, it strongly shows that they don’t have a lot of money and we can even say that they are poor. But, they are also rich. They are rich from their heart. They have their family, love... They are rich in their spirit. They are poor in money and rich in family and love. When they see people that are poorer than them, they try their best to help. But, when they see the richer people, they also don’t envy them. In the second chapter, the March family gave their delicious breakfast to the ones that were poorer than them while they just ate milk and bread. If a person’s spirit is rich, then that person is rich.

Marriage is a very important thing in a person’s life. Marriage decides a person’s rest of the life after the marriage. In Little Women, all of the four sisters got married at last. But, the four sisters have different looks about the marriage. Jo believed that she should marry a man who loves her and she should also love him, they can both support each other to do things that they liked and they need to have the same interests. But, Laurie and Amy believed that marriage must have both people love each other, accept each other and most of all the man should be a rich man that will allow them not to work all day long and get a poor life. Each of them have a different look about marriage. It is fine because if they found their love then it's alright. There isn’t such rule for the qualities of marriage in this world.

Little Women tells us the power of women and the unfair rules at that time about women. People at that time believed that women must be a household wife... But, through the time some people don’t believe like that. For example, Jo. Jo doesn’t want those rules to make her live in a world living a woman like other people believed. Nowadays, women can be free with their job, clothing, job at home... Women don’t need to follow like a woman that others believed should be. Women can also be full of power like men in the world.
