Book Review of Joey Pigza Loses Control

Jack Gantos’s Joey Pigza Loses Control is a compelling and insightful novel that tells the story of Joey Pigza, a young boy with ADHD who grapples with his own turbulent emotions and actions. The book begins with Joey and his mother and dog's road trip traveling to his father's home. Joey had not seen his father for many years. Joey anticipates the challenges ahead. Carter, his dad, intent on reconnecting and making up for lost time, flushes Joey's ADHD medication and encourages him to "take control" of his life. As Joey struggles without his medication, he faces increasing instability and fear, trying to balance his father's expectations with his own need for self-control. The novel explores Joey’s journey through these turbulent experiences.

The novel provides an insightful portrayal of ADHD through Joey’s experience, which makes us more aware of the challenges faced by people in this condition. Gantos vividly depicts Joey’s experience with ADHD, including symptoms such as Difficulty paying attention to details and making careless mistakes in activities, appears not to listen when spoken to directly, often loses things necessary for tasks and activities... The novel offers a nuanced look at how ADHD affects Joey’s interactions with those around him and his self-perception. Through Joey’s struggles, readers gain a deeper understanding of ADHD’s impact, not only on the individual but also on their relationships and daily life. By showing Joey’s experiences, the novel highlights the importance of empathy and awareness towards those with ADHD, encouraging readers to consider the challenges faced by individuals who live with this condition.

Family dynamics play an important role in Joey’s story. Carter Pigza, Joey’s father’s love for Joey is evident, but he has his inability to manage his own life, by drinking a lot of alcohol, reckless behavior, and a history of legal troubles, these things complicates their relationship. Carter’s decision to flush Joey’s medication in the toilet symbolizes his misguided attempt to help Joey take control of his life. Despite his good intentions, Carter’s actions often result in chaos and instability. In contrast, Joey’s mother offers support and intervention whenever Joey needs it. But she is also very impatient and nervous just like Carter.

Joey’s journey involves significant personal growth as he learns to manage his impulses and make better decisions. His time with his father serves as a critical test of his ability to maintain self-control and not cause chaos. Joey’s struggle with his own behavior and his efforts to implement the strategies he learned from his previous experiences highlight the ongoing process of self-improvement and healing. The novel portrays self-control not as a fixed trait but as an evolving skill that requires continuous effort and self-awareness. Joey’s journey is a testament to the resilience required to overcome personal challenges and the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity.

In conclusion, Joey Pigza Loses Control is a poignant exploration of ADHD, family dynamics, and personal growth. Jack Gantos brings Joey’s struggles to life, offering readers an authentic and empathetic portrayal of a young boy’s quest for stability and self-improvement. The novel not only provides valuable insights into ADHD and its effects but also shows the role of family support and personal determination in overcoming challenges.
