Book Review of Joey Pigza Loses Control

Joey Pigza Loses Control is a realistic fiction written by Jack Gantos. It tells the story of a boy named Joey Pigza who gets the disease of ADHD, also known as Attention Deficit hyperactivity disorder. At first, Joey Pigza left his mom and was sent to live with his dad for six weeks. He was nervous at that point. But then, he got into his dad’s baseball team and became a pitcher. The team won some games after the arrival of Joey. But something bad happened. His dad threw away his medicine by flushing it into the toilet and wanted him to be normal like the other students. He was excited and happy living with his dad and grandmother. Unfortunately, at last, he lost control and called his mom, and finally went back to live with his mom.

There is a disease called ADHD, which is the shorter term for Attention Deficit hyperactivity disorder that occurs in the story of the main character, Joey Pigza. For this kind of disease, people often have symptoms like difficulty paying attention to details and mood swings easily, and they also have learning disabilities. In the story, Joey Pigza has ADHD and the symptoms are very obvious to him. He plays baseball on his father’s team, and takes medicines to try to cure the disease. But his father doesn’t want to admit that he has this problem and  blames the patient for unreasonable reasons, which is why Joey loses control at last. From this, we could see that some parents do not admit the disease and try to hide it and have negative attitudes towards their kids and also the medicine. Therefore, we should understand people who have ADHD.

Another thing that influences the result of Joey Pigza losing control is the family problem. The family problem is huge. Joey’s family members always love him, but they all have shortages. In the story, Joey’s father threw his medicine away and did not admit Joey’s disease. He is also addicted to alcohol. On the other hand, her mother is always careless and lacks self-control. Her granny doesn’t like her mother. All these family members have one common shortage, which is lacking self-control and likes to shout at others. Therefore, family problem is a huge thing that can contribute to different results.

From the family members of Joey, we can see self-control is a critical and crucial part of the personality of a person. Self-control is a restraint exercised over one's own impulses, emotions, or desires. In the story, Joey’s father is addicted to alcohol, and he can not control himself from interrupting when Joey is speaking. Granny is impatient, and never stops talking. Mother also loses self-control when she is nervous. Self-control may seem not important, but it can bring out real psychological feelings. Therefore, self-control is a crucial factor that depends on one's feelings and it is important for us to control ourselves in emergent situations.

In conclusion, I think the story of Joey Pigza Loses Control is interesting yet touching. It talks about Joey having the disease of ADHD and suffered in his father’s home, and at last went back to live with his mother. There are three main themes that I learned in the story. I learned that the symptoms of ADHD can be severe and we should try to understand these people to our best ability. I also learned that family problems can influence a child’s whole life. In the story, Joey’s parents often lose self-control. Self-control is also a crucial factor that shows someone’s psychological feelings. This is my book review of Joey Pigza Loses Control.
