Book Review of Joey Pigza Loses Control

Joey Pigza Loses Control by Jack Gantos is a novel about a boy named Joey Pigza who is visiting his father. The two were not familiar with each other, as Joey’s mother ran away before giving birth. During those six summer weeks, Joey learned a lot about his father. It turned out that he was an alcoholic, had been to jail once, and talked too much just like Joey himself. Finally, he also hated losing and was nervous because the upcoming game would decide what rank his team would receive in the baseball championship. Luckily, Joey overcame his ADHD and helped the team win six to three, placing them at second place. Throughout the story, Joey learns that he has to learn to control himself and that winning is important both on and off the field.

Self-control is paramount for our success when competing with our peers outside of our comfort zone. If we are completely addicted to something, it becomes hard to surpass others. In the story, Joey had ADHD, so he could not sit still and always talked. But despite his disorder, he still managed to control himself, even after his father threw away his medications, which were vital for containing his disease. He found out that the tape player was his solution to dealing with ADHD during his baseball games. Thanks to this, his team won the game and saved their reputation of being undefeated. Joey overcame his ADHD and won the match. Success comes through self-restraint.

While nobody is perfect, everybody has their own positive traits and characteristics. At least one aspect of everybody’s personality is positive. Joey’s grandmother smokes too much and is biased, having a negative opinion towards Joey’s mother. Additionally, Joey’s mother is careless(drives with an expired license), doesn’t seem to care about road hazards at all, and she is very impatient when talking to Joey. Finally, Joey’s father is alcoholic and is so unreasonable that he discarded the ADHD medications. He always says that he wants everything perfect when he’s in charge, but complete perfection is not always possible and he thinks he can stop drinking while in jail, but he doesn't because the only thing stopping him are the rules. However, deep down, they all loved Joey. Joey’s relatives had flaws in their personalities, but they all cared for him. People’s characters have upsides and downsides.

Our thoughts will not lead to anything; it is our actions that truly matter, since nothing will be achieved without labor. Being active would be better than having any amount of ideas and solutions in our head and doing nothing. In the story, Joey Pigza’s father was an alcoholic and he went to jail after biting a man in the nose while at the bar. He believed he could stop drinking while being detained, but he only stopped temporarily because of the facility’s rules. As soon as he was released, he started drinking again. Also, Joey’s father was strict on his team, claiming that he wanted everything done exactly the way he wanted. As a result, he hates it when he loses, so the pressure he exerted on the team made sure that they were undefeated on the field. Joey’s father kept saying things about how he was going to improve himself but he never lived up to those words. Action is better than having plans but doing nothing.

Joey Pigza Loses Control is about a young boy named Joey Pigza who is spending 6 weeks of his summer with his father. Throughout his time living at his grandmother’s house, Joey finds out much about his father, who had been divorced before Joey was even born. From this novel, we can learn that self control will play a key part in our lives while competing with our peers. Additionally, everybody has up and downsides to their personalities and traits. Finally, while procrastination can be beneficial at moderate levels, complete laziness while having a million ideas is worse than taking action even with very few solutions to the problems we’re tackling.
