Book Review of It’s Like This, Cat

It’s Like This, Cat is a realistic fiction written by Emily Cheney Neville. It talks about a story of a boy named Dave Mitchell’s experience. At first, he got a cat from Kate, who owns a lot of cats at home, because he wanted to fight against his father’s opinion, which is to own a dog. Because of Cat’s presence, he met Tom in an apartment to find the cat. They soon became friends and Dave always visited his flower shop. In addition, on a trip with Nick at Coney Island, he met a girl named Mary. They had a good relationship, and visited the zoo and aquarium together.

First and foremost, stress and anxiety is very commonly seen, and it occurs on both animals and humans in normal life. Any physical or psychological stimuli that disrupt homeostasis result in a stress response. These commonalities are critical for understanding each state, as well as their mutual interactions. In the story, Cat and Dave all have stress responses. For example, for Cat, it always sheds and sometimes has aggressive behaviors. On the other hand, at first, Tom is afraid of meeting strangers, but because of Cat’s presence, he becomes more confident and makes a lot of friends. From the story, we can see that stress and anxiety is common, and there is a chance to change these behaviors. Therefore, stress and anxiety is a crucial and common problem, and we should keep being confident.

Secondly, when kids grow older, they grow up and become grown-ups. Maturity is the symbol and the basis to see if one is a “real adult”, and it also symbolizes that kids are no longer kids. In the story, Dave Mitchell is a typical example. At first, he is just a kid who fights against his father. But after the process of making friends and being independent in normal life, he becomes matured and grows up. From this story, we can see that judging if a person is matured not only depends on the age and other characteristics, but also depends on psychological level.

Therefore, maturity is the most important factor to depend on if someone is grown up.

Last but not least, everybody can not walk steadily without the support and love from the family. There are many advantages of family love and support, such as gaining self-confidence and self-esteem, and it is a crucial part in our normal life. In the story, when Dave’s family wanted to go out to have a trip and they were on the road, the cat accidentally got out of the car and ran away. Dave loved his cat, so he also got out of the car and wanted to save his cat. When he got home, he found that his mom and dad also got back home. From this event, we can see that Dave’s family really care about him, and without family’s support he wouldn't be confident and make so many friends. Therefore, we should cherish the support and love from the family.

In conclusion, I think the story is still interesting and touching. It talks about  a story of a boy named Dave gaining confidence and his process of making friends. From the story, I concluded three main themes. First and foremost, stress and anxiety is a common problem, and we should be confident and try to avoid the problem. Secondly, maturity is the most important factor to depend on if someone is grown up, instead of physical characteristics. Last but not least, we should cherish the love and support from our family. This is my book review of It’s Like This, Cat.
