Book Review of Island of Blue Dolphins

The Island of Blue Dolphin is a 1960 children's novel Island of the Blue Dolphins by American author Scott O'Dell. It is about a tribe called the Aleuts who came and killed Karana’s leader. They then abandoned the Island as well as Karana and Ramo. Ramo was killed by a group of wild dogs. However, Karana didn’t, she turned the leader into a hateful pet. Karana later lived on the island. The Island of Blue Dolphin is a novel based on Juana Maria’s life abandoned on an island of 18 years on San Nicolas. Juana Maria was a Nicoleño Native American.

Independence is important to people who are alone. Independence influenced Karana throughout her life living on the island in solitude. There are enemies on the island, and with no companion and no friend, she must find independence within herself in order to survive on the Island. She needed to find herself food, water, and protection in order to survive on the Island, or else she would die, either because of the pack of wild dogs, starvation, or lack of water. So, in order to survive, Karana must have independence, so that she could find food, and kill enemies.

Loneliness can be a great problem for most people that are by themselves. Without her friends, and Ramo, Karana felt lonely. Without the protection of her village’s warriors, she felt afraid. Being lonely stops her from sleeping normally, and so she won’t become normal if she is lonely for a long time. This can lead to social anxiety and depression. This can lead to panic attacks, allowing wildlife to inflict lethal damage to Karana, and makes it extremely hard to build trust with unknown life forms, or life forms that Karana had a quarrel with before.

Trust is extraordinarily crucial in order to survive loneliness and social depression. Building trust might be a long and hard thing to do, but just as they say, “More risk, more reward.” It might take months to build up trust but it is all worth it. When Karana first made the wild dogs’ leader as a pet, the dog was more of a hostage than a pet. However, after Karana built up trust with the wild dogs’ leader, Karana became friendlier to the dog, until the dog totally counts as a companion for Karana, destroying loneliness inside Karana, and bringing out happiness.

In conclusion, The Island of Blue Dolphin is a children’s novel that has a lot of useful themes. Mainly independence is important to people who are alone, loneliness can be a great problem for most people that are by themselves, rust is extraordinarily crucial in order to survive loneliness and social depression. Therefore, The Island of Blue Dolphin is worthy of the 1961 Newbery medal.
