Book Review of Home

Home by Hana Khan is a poignant short story about a young girl named Aleena and her family, who adopts a young boy named Hakeem. Hakeem makes a lot of trouble and annoys Aleena a lot, causing Aleena to start to regret adopting Hakeem when he wrecks her room, and he gets no punishment. Her parents know that Hakeem is just learning, and he’s in a strange environment that’s new to him. When Aleena has her birthday party, Hakeem ruins the activity, and Aleena is extremely angry. But when she hears her friends call Hakeem “annoying” and a “monster,” she stands up for him. Aleena realizes that Hakeem is just getting overstimulated, and she can’t really blame him. The story concludes with them blowing out the candles on Aleena’s birthday cake, and Aleena learns the true meaning of family. This story is a memorable, emotional and passionate story about the importance of family, love, and understanding.

Family is a central part of everyone’s lives, and we should value them while we can and always remember to forgive and love them. Family is like an umbrella in a rainstorm, they’ll always help shield you from harm and misfortune, and we can always count on them for help shouldering our burdens and solving problems. Inside of Home, Hakeem constantly ruins Aleena’s life in worse and worse ways. First, he scribbles on her beautiful walls. Then, he dumps out all of her slime on her carpet, staining it. Finally, he turns her birthday party activity into a catastrophe by pouring all of the sand inside the bottles out. But Aleena finally understands how hard it has been for him to adjust to a new life, and how he’s been getting overwhelmed. She defends him and lets him blow out her birthday candles, and they end happily. Aleena remembered to forgive, despite Hakeem’s heinous actions. Family is about loving each other and always defending them. We have to protect our family and allow them to help when we need help, and let them keep us from becoming overwhelmed and overburdened.

Love is a powerful force, because of how it keeps us together and how it brings out the best in people. Love provides a cushion for any emotional and mental injuries, because of how we’ll have someone to rely on for comfort and happiness. We can help others more easily and we’ll have support when we have too big a burden to carry alone. In Home, Aleena loved Hakeem from the first moment she saw a picture of him, and her love only increased as she saw more and more of this cute, brown haired orphan boy. It was love that drove her to eventually convince her family to adopt him and when he finally came home with her, he was disappointing. He ruined her room, wrecked her slime, and basically made trouble for her at every corner. But she still loved him, as she showed when she defended him when he destroyed all of the pretty sand bottles. Despite tragedies and angry moments, love will allow us to forgive others for what they’ve done, and strengthen us in times of need. Love is an important factor in what we do, and we should always try to help others through it.

Forgiving and understanding others allows us to work past our disputes and can allow us to work better together. When we forgive someone for what they’ve done, we can put ourselves past petty arguments and allow us to understand each other better. We can relax confidently knowing that we’ve settled our arguments with another. In Home, Hakeem was always messing up Aleena’s room, over and over, in worse and worse ways. But as he did this, Aleena was always extremely angry. But Aleena knew that Hakeem was just playing around and didn’t want to hurt her. Aleena forgave Hakeem, as shown when she allowed him to join her birthday party. In doing so, she understood Hakeem better, and tried to be more kind towards him. She loved him more once she realized how disorienting and confusing this was for Hakeem, and she became more confident. Understanding one another makes us better at tolerating each other because we know what drives our friends and foes to do what they’ve done. Often, it’s simply because they are confused, or angry. Forgiveness and understanding work together to allow us to be nicer and pleasurable for each other.

Home by Hana Khan teaches the important lessons of family, love and most importantly, understanding each other and forgiving them. It features a cast of lovable characters whose actions and descriptions make you want to root for them. The moving plot shows the power of forgiveness and love, and their understanding of each other united them into a family. Aleena’s sternness with Hakeem makes him sad, but he still tries to make up for messing up her room. Aleena then repays the favor by allowing him to join her birthday party and forgive him for ruining her room and activities, showing her understanding of Hakeem’s overstimulation and confusion. Home by Hana Khan is an amazing story, and I recommend it for readers of all ages.
