Book Review of Hatchet

The book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen is about a kid named Brian who survives in the wilderness for nearly two months. He uses his wits to overcome tough challenges and matures mentally and physically. He learns many new skills such as making fire and hunting, with the help of his hatchet. He learns from his mistakes, and he eventually perfects his method of surviving in the wilderness. He has a shelter and multiple reliable sources of food. Eventually, he gets rescued in the end, thanks to a transmitter that tells an overhead plane he’s down there. Hatchet is a riveting book about how a boy grows up into a young man through trials by nature.

Nature is an important part of life, and we shouldn’t hurt it, rather, we should learn to live in peace with it. Mankind is currently destroying large parts of nature every day. But nature is our only defense against the ongoing threat of global warming. We depend on nature for food. Nature would be fine without us, but we would be doomed without it. We need to respect nature. In Hatchet, Brian started off trying to survive only, but he eventually learned to take what nature offered him. He collected berries, meat, and crafted useful tools to help him hunt. Nature has many gifts, and we must return what it gives by making sure we try our best not to hurt nature, and protect the environment. We constantly struggle against nature, but it’s better for everyone if we work in harmony with it. Nature offers sustenance, and we must respect it in return. Nature is a powerful force that we should work with instead of fighting against.

The power of positive thinking is strong, and we should try our best to stay positive. Staying positive puts us into a mindset that allows us to be more efficient, more patient and more cheerful. Throughout the story, Brian always listened to his English teacher’s saying: “Stay positive and stay on top of things.” That allowed him to be positive and realize he had to get food and shelter immediately. It motivated him and gave him a goal. He was focused, and he was positive. And he managed to build a shelter, and gather some berries for food. When Brian thought of things that had happened to him in a new, positive way, he actually learned from it instead of just feeling bad for himself. This is clearly shown in the incident with the porcupine. He was in a lot of pain, but he learned the lessons that he had to be prepared for anything. Being positive allows us to keep on going, and keeps us from giving up. Positive thinking leads to positive results. Positivity improves our life and changes our outlook on life. A positive attitude is a valuable possession.

Our education is immensely important, and allows us to overcome obstacles we couldn’t have before. To do everyday ordinary things, we need to learn how to do them, and we should learn more everyday so we can do normal things better. Nature is an excellent teacher, that we can learn a lot from. Inside Hatchet, Brian had only the clothes on his back, a few dollars, his hatchet, and his wits. But he survived by learning how to adapt and he learned how to use his hatchet to eventually make fire, create a bow and arrows, craft a spear, forage for non-toxic berries, and hunt fish, birds and rabbits. He learned how to do better by learning from his mistakes, such as when he made fire. He tried over and over, but he eventually figured out how. Or when he hunted fish, he missed over and over, but eventually he remembered that water refracts light. He used his knowledge to accomplish all of these tasks. Our education is crucial to our survival, and we need to keep on learning new things and honing our current knowledge, so when we need it we can use it.

Hatchet is an amazing book that teaches important lessons that help us through life. Some of these lessons are that we should live in harmony with nature, use our knowledge to assist us throughout life, and stay positive. We should work with nature since fighting against it does not help anyone, while working with nature benefits everyone. We also have to observe nature carefully because it is one of the best places for learning first-hand knowledge which can teach us many valuable lessons. Moreover, we can master different skills by constantly learning and practicing. Positive thinking allows us to keep on going, especially when you’re in a bad situation. I highly recommend this book to ages 10-12.
