The book Flora and Ulysses is about the life of a girl and her pet squirrel, Ulysses. Flora’s family is very different. Her father says mother doesn’t have love in her heart, so she puts most of her time in books. Flora’s mother says father doesn’t have the sense of love even if love is right in front of him. At last, Flora, is a self-proclaimed cynic, which means she doesn’t believe in things, mostly good things. One time, Flora saved a squirrel that was vacuumed up. The squirrel, which was called Ulysses, lived with Flora, but mother doesn’t like him. A day at night, mother kidnapped Ulysses because of her detest, and fortunately he was saved.
In this story, Ulysses’s sudden appearance grew Flora’s family’s problems. How could devoiced parents and a cynic kid raise a squirrel with making everyone satisfied? Flora’s family members all have different personalities, so they have different likes and hates. Before Ulysses came, their family simply can’t even show love to each other. They have different points of view, which means love has different values inside them. Their family also focuses on different importances, and that’s why they can’t feel love. Ulysses appearance grew the difference between Flora’s family and added disagreements. Flora’s family still love each other, but it is not so obvious, so they need to learn to understand each other.
Flora’s family had a lot of family problems, but slowly they had some progress on their personal growth. First, they learned to compromise. Flora’s family’s problems are mainly caused by not understanding, so learning to think about others and sometimes tolerating is important. Next, they learned to understand. Flora thinks father doesn’t love her so much, then Dr. Meescham helps Flora to understand her father's love. They found out that father has a capacious heart and tolerates a lot, so he is not expressing too much. It is not like what mother said, no sense of love. This shows that there is a misunderstanding between mother and father. At last, they learned to believe, especially Flora. She is a cynic kid that doesn’t believe in good things, so believing can help her have and express more emotions. Overall, Flora’s family all matured and solved some family problems.
Even though they solved some family problems, they still had some, and they all faced isolation. As a kid, Flora is unfortunate because she has an incomplete family and uncaring parents. How could a kid bare it? So, Flora became cynic. No matter how her parents changed, she will have this experience forever. Flora’s mother, is a person that needs romance, but she has a husband that doesn’t know how to care her feelings. Because of this, she put all her feelings and time into writing, then no time for others. She likes the lamp, and wants everything to be normal. This lets other people feel pressure and think she is crazy with her books. Flora’s father thinks he has a not loving wife, and he is too tolerant to express his feeling. This made him have pain inside his heart but to tolerant that his daughter can’t feel it, And Flora even thinks father doesn’t love her. There is too much misunderstanding in this family.
In the book Flora and Ulysses, Flora’s family has a lot of problems, and there is also a lot of misunderstanding. The parents all think that each other is not a loving wife or an uncaring husband that has no sense, but actually father is too tolerant to express his feelings, and mother spends much time on her book but no time for others because she needs romance. They don’t know the deepest feeling inside each other, and that’s why it seems like they don’t have love. Ulysses sudden appearance did let the problems grow, but it also solved some problems. The family members all faced a hard time, but they didn’t tell other people. Without Ulysses, they will never understand each other.
