Book Review of Dear Juno

Juno watched as a group of planes flew through the sky and wondered if any of them came from where his grandmother lived. He then read a letter from his grandmother, with a picture of his grandma holding a cat and a dried flower. Since they understood each other, he replied by drawing a letter. Then, his grandmother sent another letter to him, without words this time. He knew his grandmother wanted another letter from the colored pencils, and that she is going to visit him by the toy plane.

The relationship between family members can still be very strong as long as they love each other, regardless of distance. When family members love each other, they will understand each other and the relationship between them can be so close, even their physical locations are far away. Juno and his grandmother are in different countries; Juno’s grandmother lived in Korea, while Juno did not. But because they love each other, they miss each other, and Juno had thought about his grandmother when he saw the planes in the sky. Their relationship is equally as strong as the people who live closer together. Physical distance doesn’t matter in determining the strength of the relationship between family members, but the distance by heart does matter.

The communication method doesn’t matter, as long as people is willing to decode the message. It is always more convenient to use words, but the meaning doesn’t change even if the way of communication changes. Juno and his grandmother begun by using a photo plus an object and words, but Juno can understand the meaning of the letter before his parents read the words to him by the photo and object. Then, they only used pictures and objects. Whether people communicate using words, pictures, objects, or just plain talk, it doesn’t matter—as long as they pay attention to each other and understand each other.

A “cliffhanger” ending allows us to imagine the next story and feel that the story hasn’t really ended. It leaves us with more questions than answers. We might wonder if Juno will write another letter to his grandma or if his grandmother will visit him with her cat. We will have many questions about Juno’s grandmother’s visit and Juno’s second letter, and may have an imagination. The “cliffhanger” ending has more to it than just the end of the story; it is also the beginning of something else, like a sequel to the story, that isn’t shown to us, but we can imagine it.

In conclusion, Dear Juno is a warm book about family and communication. It has a “cliffhanger” ending that is also the beginning of another story and makes us feel that this story will never end. We can see that family members who love each other have a close relationship with each other, and ways of communication don't matter if the person receiving the message understands the message. I recommend you to read this book.
