Book Review of Because of Winn Dixie

Basic Elements: Characters: Winn-Dixie, Opal, The Pecher, Gloria, Otis.Setting:Home, Gloria’s house Plot: Winn-Dixie has a fear of thunderstorms.

Genre: Children’s novel

Perspective: third person view point

The story Winn-Dixie is written by Kate DiCamillo. It talks about Opal, a little girl who finds a dog in a supermarket and names the dog after the market; Winn-Dixie. Winn-Dixie can not be left home alone, he will bark until he sees Opal or tear up the whole house. The dog needs to see Opal in order not to do something annoying. One day Winn-Dixie runs into the forest and then when Opal finds him, Winn-Dixie is with Gloria Dump. Gloria is Opal’s friend now and they decide to have a party. Opal invites everyone she knows. Gloria makes a punch while Opal makes some sandwiches. Then they decorate the place together. While the party goes, it starts to rain and Winn-Dixie disappears. Opal looks in the streets and all the places she knows and then, she gives up and leaves because it is too dangerous outside. Finally she finds out that Winn-Dixie is at Gloria’s home all alone.

Everyone will get lonely therefore we will need connections in order to overcome it. Everyone will get lonely one day, if we want to overcome and have less loneliness, we will need contact with others. If we miss someone we will probably always remember them and think about it often, it is normal. The preacher's wife left him, so the preacher often thinks about her and how he still loves her. Opal's mother left her too, and now the preacher and Opal don't have a full family. If Opal ever sees another person's mother, she will think of how her mother left her. Lacking someone or missing something can cause loneliness. We may be lonely when we think about the relatives we might have lost. We should not be bothered by someone lost, we need to continue our lives as if nothing has happened. Losing a relative may be painful and having connections with others is the best thing we can do.

Being abandoned is something awful while not controllable, our life needs to move on and we should not self abandon. Abandoning people is cruel, there will be a big influence on the one who is abandoned. People abandon others for a particular reason but there is nothing we can do about it. In the story, the Opal’s mother left her. A mother leaving a baby is cruel and unusual. Normally a mother should love their baby very much. The Preacher’s wife left him and now the Preacher is not thinking about her much after he gets into the community and talks with others. Self abandon is a terrifying thing to do, if we self abandon we will not have a good life and treat others badly too. We will get stuck in the same emotion. Being abandoned is terrible and it will cause mental damage with physical harm, having more contact with more communication might just help.

We have to let go of the past that hurts us and continue having a normal life. Sometimes our past may be disturbing, there will be nothing we can do but try to forget it. It may seem impossible but it is the best way to have a better life. In the story, Opal has to let the thought of her mother come back be forgotten. It almost seems impossible to see Opal’s mother after years of not coming back. The preacher’s wife is Opal’s mother, the preacher has given up hope that his wife is ever coming back. Opal’s life should move forward instead of waiting for her mother to come back. Some things can not be controlled, they can not be changed so we need to let the thought of it go away.  Accepting our past is important for not only helping us think about it, but also helping our mood too.

This is a thoughtful story that tells about Opal who finds a dog in a supermarket. Almost all of the things in the story are because of Winn Dixie. Opal meets Otis who is the owner of the pet shop and Gloria dump. Then Opal has a party but then it rains. Winn-Dixie disappears in all the confusion. After a useless search in the streets Opal finds Winn Dixie at Gloria’s home all alone. Opal makes lots of friends and is happy after she is in the community even though her mother left her. First Everyone will get lonely one day. It may be because of losing  relatives or others but there is nothing we can do about it. Second, abandonment is an awful thing. If we are abandoned by others we may suffer a lot. Third, letting our past that hurt go is important, we may not think about the hurting old days anymore. Our life should move forward. This is an extremely excellent story that is very worth reading.
