Alice in Wonderland vs Secret Garden: Alice vs Mary

The story of “The Secret Garden” talks about a girl named Mary who is an orphan. She traveled from India to Miselthveit to live with her uncle. She soon finds out about a secret garden and makes it more lively. Together She and two boys, named Dickon and Colin, play in the garden and make it more lovely. The story of “Alice in Wonderland” talks about a girl named Alice who follows a rabbit into another world. There, she finds her way into many curious places and meets many unique creatures. In the end, she awoke when she dreamed of cards attacking her. Between these two characters, I like Alice better.

First, Alice is a symbol of childhood, while Mary is a symbol of maturing. And because of that, Alice has a great imagination and loves to pretend to be what she isn’t. I like this kind of creativity, it lets me escape reality and it also gives me good ideas for inventions or work that I couldn’t do when I am thinking hard. For example, one time, I was working on a math problem, it was the kind of problem that you couldn’t solve easily,  and I couldn’t solve it. But after I awoke the next morning, I knew the answer. This shows that dreams can help us to solve problems. Even some of the great works in history were made based on dreams. If there wasn’t imagination, there wouldn’t be a needle to weave and there wouldn’t have been a poem called Kubula Khan. Creativity is important, so this is why I like Alice.

Second, Alice always has good manners and speaks politely. When she accidentally offends someone, she says sorry. When someone is doing something, she waits until they are finished before speaking. Alice is often helping people too with their troubles. Because of her kindness many people helped Alice with things that she couldn’t have done by herself. In the story, after Alice met Tweedledum and Tweedledeee, if Alice hadn’t been nice and shook both their hands at once, it might have hurt one of them’s feelings and they wouldn’t be so nice to her. In this world, sometimes good manners can get you through some problems in life. Sometimes people evaluate others by how kind they are. So, I like Alice because she is nice.

Lastly, Alice dreamed of adventuring in a fantasy world. Alice has much creativity and has interesting adventures, which were actually realistic dreams. And because I am a child I like fantasy and interesting adventures. Usually, when you see the word “adventure” in a book or game, you will think of fighting monsters in the wild, to get more powerful. But Alice’s adventure is different. Instead of the classic fighting to survive story, Alice’s story is full of fantasy things, like alive chess pieces, talking rabbits, alive cards, etc. After reading this story, my head is filled with many different ideas. So, I like Alice, because her adventures are special.

In conclusion, this essay compares two characters from different stories. The first is Mary, from “The Secret Garden” and the second one is Alice, from “Alice in Wonderland”. The first story talks about a girl named Mary who lives in her uncle’s house, after her parents died. One day, she found a garden and played in it with two other children. The second story talks about a girl named Alice who explores another world, where things are different from here. In the end, she wakes up and finds out that it was only a dream. Overall, I like Alice better for three reasons. One, Alice is creative and interesting. Two, she is nice and has refined manners. Last, her adventures are unique compared to others. Therefore, I like Alice better.
