AI vs Human Labor

AIs used to be amazing, brand-new, high tech computer systems, but nowadays, they’ve become common and easy to use. There are so many applications of AI to our daily lives, and there are so many different types, making it so that there is a robot or an AI for any purpose, from self-driving cars to face ID to just simple chatbots. These are all incredibly useful because of their speed and accuracy, and they're constantly growing in popularity. Common examples of AI include ChatGPT, Dall-E, and Google Assistant. ChatGPT is a common AI that people from military leaders to lawyers to normal kids use for advice and help. Dall-E is a common and useful tool that draws AI generated art. And Google Assistant is a simple helper for searching. These are just three examples, but there are many more. As AI use becomes more and more common, will it simply bolster human progress? Or will it remove the need for human labor?

There are many examples of AI based systems in our daily lives, and one example of them is ChatGPT. ChatGPT is an AI chatbot created by OpenAI for the use of having something to talk to and having something to help when you have difficult homework, or for when you need some quick information on a topic. According to the latest available data, more than 180 million people use ChatGPT, a fact made all the more startling by how this is only two years after it was created and released. According to Hurix, “ChatGPT has many benefits, including its ability to create personalized interactive lessons, increase access to education for people with disabilities, assist educators in curating lesson plans, and more.” It helps make companies more successful, as 92% of Fortune 500 companies use it now. Currently, 40% of all companies are using it, while 30% more plan to use it in the future! It can improve your resume, help you with your homework, debug code, generate ideas, and help you do many things. ChatGPT is a prime example of an AI chatbot that has ushered in a new generation of AI, aptly called “generational” AI.

Another example of AI usage that isn’t a chatbot is for Face ID and Fingerprint Recognition. This is useful especially when we are attempting to prevent terrorists, hackers, and protect our identity. Face ID is widely used to get into our phones and to access other important information. Fingerprint recognition is also used similarly, but it has the ability to scan for criminals inside fingerprint databases too. Now, 81% of all phones have biometric scanning capabilities, meaning they can analyze fingerprints and other related actions. According to E-connect Global, “broadly speaking, facial recognition technology is 99 percent accurate.” This is a very high accuracy rate, only cementing the fact that AI powered recognition technology is useful, efficient, and effective. According to the Center for Strategic and International Studies, “in ideal conditions, facial recognition systems can have near-perfect accuracy.” The intricacies of AI may be difficult to understand, but one thing we can all know is its ability to help us.

The last way that AI can be useful is for controlling robots, such as for cooking robots and self-driving cars. For humans, it can be exhausting and inefficient for us to have to control and complete mundane tasks, so it’s best to delegate them to AI, which can quickly help us navigate to our destination, fly drones and create delicious meals. According to Valiente Mott, “Reports have shown that autonomous vehicles can help save society approximately $800 billion each year.” and that “One of the major benefits of self-driving cars is their ability to communicate with each other.” Of the 37,133 vehicle fatalities in 2017, 94% of the crashes were due to human error. Computers with sophisticated AI and complex algorithms will essentially eliminate costly and deadly human error. It’s estimated self-driving cars can reduce accidents by up to 90%. These benefits are huge, and mean that with the rise of AI, humans will cause less incidents that take lives, because of the steadfastness of self-driving cars.

AI has many benefits, such as giving us easy and quick information, stopping identity theft using face recognition and fingerprint recognition, and helping stay safe by preventing accidents. With AI, we can go beyond our current limits and transcend the problems currently plaguing us. Human labor can be horrible to the workers, and if they could instead use AI to help quicker solve the problems, everyone would be better off. Instead of completing menial and meaningless tasks, we can dedicate our time to contemplating nature and philosophy. Human labor is always very important, but it would be much easier with AI to help us along, to give us ideas and inspiration. AI can help save lives and make us more productive and efficient, benefiting everyone in the world.
