Myths are stories that are told involving supernatural human beings and usually, gods. These myths are used to explain natural phenomenons back in ancient times. These myths with gods are usually split into two types, Greek and roman. The most powerful Greek gods and their wives are Zeuss and Hera, while for the Romans it's Jupiter and Juno. There are lots of myths like Persephone, All stories are Anansi’s, and the twelve labors of Hercules. In Persephone, the main character is captured by her uncle Hades and her mother eventually finds her but she has to stay in the underworld for some time each year because she ate their food which is why we have winter. In all the stories are Anansi’s, Anansi wants the stories from the god of the heavens so he has to capture three dangerous animals which he does using his brain and he gets the stories. Finally, in the twelve labors of Hercules, Hercules is punished by the god Hera and has to do twelve grueling tasks which lead him to becoming a god. These myths have themes like twisted relationships, as well as legendary elements. The stories go beyond just the narratives, exploring other themes that add more meaning.
In these myths, these gods have very twisted connections with their relatives. Because the characters are usually gods, they feel like they can do whatever they want, even if it is very strange and unusual. Zeus wants more kids because that way, there are more gods or demigods. In Persephone, She is captured by her uncle, Hades, who is the god of the underworld and her mom, Demmedes, has to ask Zeuss, the father, to help her. Hades is also forcing Persphone to marry him. This is very peculiar because normally, an uncle wouldn't marry their niece. In All stories are Anansi’s, Anansi is actually the god's son so the god is proud of him when he gets all the animals using his intellect. Gods would not normally send their sons on missions to capture dangerous animals, this is unusual. In the twelve labors of Hercules, Hercules relative, Hera, is the cause of all the labors and Hera friends bosses Hercules around. Because Hera and Hercules are relatives, you wouldn’t expect Hera to hate Hercules that much but she does. These stories all have different relationships among the characters which affects the plot and how the stories end.
These myths feature intricate family relationships, but they are also legendary stories. They were used in ancient times to explain events that people couldn't normally understand. The myths didn't just account for unexplainable occurrences - they also told the stories of how heroes came to be.In Persephone, she ate fruit from the underworld so she has to stay there a certain amount of time each year. That is when her mother, Demeter, the Greek god of harvest, would weep so then there would be no growth or sunshine which explained the cause of winter. In all stories are Anansi’s, the original owner of the stories gave the stories to Anansi because he did what he asked. This is why people say that all stories are Anansi’s, he theoretically owns them. Hercules had to go through all those grueling challenges but at the end, he became a god for his bravery and courage. These legends are very entertaining and inspirational so that they could pass down through generations.
Myths have many underlying themes beyond just the stories themselves. Common themes in Greek mythology include love, bravery, and fate, which add deeper meaning and significance to the stories. In Persephone, after she got captured, her mother tried everything to find her and even though it was hard, she eventually found out and complained to zeus. This shows the power of mothers' love. In all stories are Anansi’s, the clever spider doesn’t use his size to capture the animal, but his trickery where he makes clever traps that the animal is captured in. This shows that you don't have to be big in order to do what Anansi did, using tricks. In the twelve labors of Hercules, Hercules shows strength, intelligence, and support to others while also suffering the consequences of being led mad by Hera. These ideas are all part of a hero who Hercules is and he eventually becomes a god for his contributions and work. Greek mythology is rich with hidden, underlying themes that add deeper layers of meaning and insight beyond the surface-level stories.
These myths have complicated relationships, tells about natural phenomena, and about other themes in these stories. These relationships among relatives are quite peculiar and motivate and help move the plot of these stories. These stories also help explain some natural phenomenons that weren’t understood so they used stories of gods to help explain it. Not only are these myths helpful at explaining, there are also deeper themes that are similar to other myths. Greek and Roman myths are not the only type, there are countless other myths from different cultures like the chinese. The Chinese character relationships are not so complicated and these legends are beautiful stories about the moon and other topics like medicine. These stories have had a big impact on Chinese culture and how it functions today. Heroes in these stories are made because of their contributions to humans. People like Change(worshiper of the moon), Shen Nong Shi(related to chinese medicine), Nv Wa(related to how humans are created), and finally Pan Gu who is related to how the world was created. Whether Greek, Roman, or Chinese in origin, these timeless tales continue to influence the societies they emerge from and provide insight into the human experience.
