About Michael Phelps

Michael Phelps is a famous American swimmer in the olympics who holds a record of most medals ever won. It was mostly because of the Athens Olympic Games in 2004. The whole world was expecting him to break the record of most gold medals ever earned in a game by earning 8. Phelps was very popular because of this and although there was a lot of pressure, he didn’t show a single bit of doubt or fear. But in Phelp’s view, earning 8 gold medals and beating the world record wasn’t the only thing about the olympics. He cared deeply for his teammates too, so when his teammate Ian Crocker was feeling down, Phelps gave up his spot which would’ve guaranteed him a medal to his friend. In the end of the Athens Olympic games, he didn’t beat the record, but he swam record times and helped the U.S. achieve victory.

Phelps is a very famous swimmer for his many achievements he had made during his career. He was a very determined man and set many goals for himself. As stated in the beginning he had set a goal of breaking the world record of the most gold medals earned in a single olympics. To do this he needed to earn 8 gold medals to break the old record. Thus was held by another American swimmer named Mark Spitz, who had won 8 gold medals in 1972 Olympics in Munich, Germany. Unfortunately, he didn’t reach his goal, but he was very close. Although he didn’t break the world record for most gold medals won in a single Olympics, he still did break a world record. He swam a world record time in the medley relay, which is where each swimmer swims a stroke of their choice. Even though Phelps didn't meet his own goal, he still managed to do something evident.

Throughout Phelps’ career and especially the Athens Olympic Games he showed that he cared a lot for his teammates. It was especially recognizable during the Athens Olympic Games when he gave up his spot in a medley relay to his teammate Ian Crocker. Although Phelps knew that he was guaranteed a golden medal in that relay, he cared about his teammate’s ambitions and feelings more than a golden medal. Phelps stated that he wanted to share the fun of the Olympic Games and wanted everyone to enjoy it. So when his teammate, Ian Crocker, was feeling down about losing a gold medal for the U.S, Phelps gave up his spot and gave it to his teammate again. This was Phelps showing kindness towards his fellow teammates, showing that he cared about him dearly.

Phelps wasn’t good at swimming just because of his skills, he also had a great virtue. Virtue means moral excellence, or the conformity of someone’s life to conduct moral and ethical principles. Phelps was very competitive but also a very good sport. After being put up against the 2 best swimmers in the world, he said that he had a lot of fun racing with them. He was also very ambitious as he set very high goals for himself. We already know that he wanted to break a world record and get 8 gold medals. Although he set very high goals he still knew who he was and didn’t over estimate himself or under estimate. He is also very determined in what he does and knows what he wants.

Michael Phelps is a very famous person with a very likable personality. He has made many achievements in his life, is very caring, and has great virtues. One of his achievements was the amount of gold medals he has earned in his competitive swimming career. He also set a world record for the fastest medley relay time. Phelps also thinks that everyone should enjoy the Olympic games and is very caring about his teammates. He showed this by giving up a spot that would guarantee him a gold medal to a teammate who wasn’t feeling his best. He is also competitive, ambitious, and determined. Although he sets extremely high goals for himself, he never overestimates or underestimates his own abilities.
