Human nature refers to the basic characteristics that define humanity, including ways of thinking, feeling, and acting. It is a concept debated by numerous philosophers.  It is very complex and differs across various cultures and philosophical viewpoints, often related to discussions of morality, society, and personal development. I have read two horror stories that both have morals and basic human natures. In the Monkey’s Paw, the White Family received the evil monkey’s paw and made wishes; Herbert died. From this book, I learned that we shouldn’t be greedy. The other book: The Elephant man which talks about Dr. Treves, helping Merrick to recover from his disabilities, has some good human natures including kindness, respect, and empathy. There are also many more in daily life.

The brightness of human nature is often highlighted through our skills of good human natures. This is shown from both stories, including realizing the mistakes we made then correcting them and showing kindness, respect and empathy. Despite having negative characteristics like selfishness and greediness, humans are also capable of discovering goodness as people all have personal growth and will understand while growing up. This is further shown by our ability to choose kindness and have stable friends, which can lead to more delightful lives. Furthermore, having experiences of love, compassion, and creativity can express human consciousness, showing that our nature has positive and high qualities. By knowing and discovering these topics, we can have a brighter and more peaceful society.

The darkness of human nature is also a complex side of our lives, often revealing as tendencies towards many bad things including cruelty, violence, and immorality. Psychological studies have shown how ordinary individuals can become extraordinary evil. People can get violent and evil as they might watch movies or play games that are horrible and may contain violence such as guns. In the Monkey’s Paw, the White Family got a bit greedy and wished for 200 dollars. Greediness is a dark human nature, which caused Herbert’s death. In the Elephant Man, Treves showed rudeness to Merrick so Dr. Treves rescued Merrick to London Hospital. This shows that there are consequences to evil human natures.

Bright human natures and dark human natures happen from many causes. For good human natures, they happen when people have their personal growth; when they have grown up. They would be more mature and can understand these things. People may have experienced a bad consequence from evil human natures and have the ambition of changing himself. There are many causes for dark human natures too. People can be greedy when they don’t work for himself while wanting more; this is laziness.  Selfish people are people we shouldn’t make friends with; they only have self- interest.  People who do many bad things don’t have self conscience and empathy.

In conclusion, human nature can occur to everyone. It depends if it is bright or dark. We need to stick to the bright as it will help us do many things in our lives. From both stories (The Monkey’s Paw and The Elephant Man), I have learned the negative consequences from the bad human natures. Good human natures include kindness, respect, compassion, and empathy while bad human natures are cruelty, violence, curiosity, and greediness. Human nature happens as we grow and it depends on the things we do.
