About Growing Up

How do you know when you’ve finally grown up? Growing up is a gradual process of maturation during which we change from children to adults. When you can accept the failure of chasing girls like Jose in the story "The Challenge". When you can like the Narrator in the story "Too soon a woman”, when both father and Mary left to look for food, although he was only 11 years old, he took the responsibility of adults and took care of his sister. Or when you are like Jerry in the story of “President Cleveland, WHERE ARE YOU?” who finally knows the importance of family and is willing to give up what he has always dreamed of for his family. It can be said that when we learn to face failure, learn to trust, know how to share difficulties with our family, and give up benefits for our family, we think we are growing up and mature.

It is very important to learn to face our mistakes and failure and correct our mistakes in time in the process of growth. In the process of growing up, we will all encounter challenges and temptations. Jose in the story of “The challenge” met the girl he wanted and tried to pursue the girl, but he wrongly thought of females and thought girls pity the weaker. After his fiasco, he was very depressed and it was difficult to accept his failure. The narrator in the story of “Too soon a woman” also was prejudiced against Mary and misunderstood that she would eat mushrooms herself. In fact, Mary was worried about the toxicity of mushrooms. She would rather take risks to eat mushrooms first. When she was assured of safety, she let the Narrator and sister eat. In the story of “President Cleveland, WHERE ARE YOU?”Jerry was obsessed with the cards and felt guilty for his selfishness because he didn't raise money with his brother to buy a birthday gift for his father. Although the causes of Jose and Jerry's failures and mistakes are different, I think they find their own problems from their failures and mistakes and correct them in time. Every failure and every mistake in everyone's growth process can be a step towards maturity in their growth path. In the story, Jerry finally sold his treasured card to help his family through difficulties when his family needed it. This is the best proof that he corrected his selfish mistakes in time, and it also means that he has grown up.

Growth means learning to self-control adolescent fantasy or adolescent impulse, return to real life, and face reality instead of holding dreams in vain. In the process of growth, we will encounter different temptations. The dream of youth is sometimes unrealistic, but it is inevitable to experience growth. Jose in the story of “The challenge” was attracted by the new schoolgirl and dreamed of many ways to pursue her, but failed in the end. In the story of “Too Soon a Woman”, when the narrator’s father left to look for relatives and food, he disagreed with Mary about many things,he hated Mary and even wanted to kill her. Jerry in the story of “President Cleveland, WHERE ARE YOU?” was obsessed with collecting presidential cards. His family encountered financial difficulties. At first, he didn’t want to give up collecting all the cards. He did not share the burden with his own money. But the three boys took different methods to control their adolescent fantasy or impulse and face real life. Jose talked with his father after losing the game to the girl, hoping that he could start again soon. The narrator finally trusted Mary, cooperating with each other, sharing the responsibility of father and taking care of himself and sister. Jerry saw his father lose his job and his parents and brother still worked hard to get through the difficulties. He finally sold his treasured card and shared the family with his parents. I think that when you are not capricious and learn to control your adolescent fantasy, it means that you gradually grow up and become mature.

Growth means responsibility and dedication. In President Cleveland, WHERE ARE YOU? Jerry’s father lost his job because of the Great Depression. His brother Armond began to use his spare time to work as a temporary worker in a small shop near the school. Armond has been sharing part of the responsibilities of his parents and doing his part for the family. Jerry finally knows how to take responsibility for his family and he gave up the five cards he dreamed of and the vanity he had pursued before in exchange for $5 to help his family and share the burden of his parents and brother. In Too Soon a Woman, the 11-year-old boy shared Mary's burden after his father left, and put down the dissatisfaction and prejudice against Mary. He went out to look for food and took turns watching at night to protect the safety of his two little sisters. The two boys grew up in the hardships brought by life. They shared with the family, took the responsibility of helping the family through the difficulties, and selflessly paid for the family.

In conclusion, Growth is the process of getting mature and getting rid of childishness. Growth is Jose's learning to accept his failure; It was Jerry who gave up his presidential card for his family; The 11-year-old boy also plays the role of an adult in the forest to protect his sister. Growth is a kind of transformation, from an ignorant child to a young man who dares to take responsibility, and to an adult who can bear the weight. However, growing up is never easy. Growth means learning to accept failure, self-control, cope with real life and dedicate oneself to the family. Growth means that we are constantly losing and acquiring new things, eventually being mature.
