About Family Influence

The family members showed the influences of the family to the main characters’ in a special way that they may accept and agree with. They also show a sense of caring and love when they need help. The Pigman and Me talked about a boy called Paul that made himself in trouble on the first day of school and how he got himself out of the trouble. Paul made a boy called John a black eye. John wanted revenge on Paul. Paul during the revenge accidentally tripped himself, it looked like John hit him on the ground. John was powerful again and left. But, a boy called Moose wanted to hit Paul more, so when he was just going to hit Paul, Paul’s sister came and threw Moose miles away. The Goodness of Matt Kaizer talked about a boy called Matt that always believed that he was a bad boy then after he visited Mary Beth’s almost dying father, he found that he was a good boy too. TA NA E KA talked about a girl called Mary that was in the Kaw Indian tribe. She didn't want to eat grasshoppers and crickets and berries, so she borrowed five dollars from her teacher, then he had hamburgers and milkshakes during the whole TA NA E KA test. When family influences affect us, we may have a new opinion about something.

The family members share a sense of caring when we need help and always love us. In The Pigman and Me, Paul was going to get revenge from John. He didn’t know how to fight. He was afraid of being beaten by John. Then when Paul got back home, Nonno Frankie senses Paul's unhappiness and offers help by telling him what to do during the fight. Nonno Frankie didn’t just shout at Paul and told him it was bad to fight… Instead, he eventually tells Paul what he should do next to avoid getting himself in trouble, and then tells him how to fight with John. He told Paul to yell at first to scare and let the enemy be confused.  Then in The Goodness of Matt Kaizer, Matt’s father had a good temper even when Matt just said that he was a bad boy. He constantly persuades Matt to be a good kid. He let Matt do goodness. He let Matt go to see Mary Beth’s father because he wanted Matt to do goodness. He wasn’t angry about Matt, he kept a good temper. He loved his son. So, he wanted him to be good. But, instead of shouting at Matt and letting him do goodness, he went step by step to let Matt want to go to do goodness. At last in TA NA E KA, Mary’s mom found out that Mary didn’t want to go to TA NA E KA because she thinks it's boring and no use. Then, Mary’s mom shows her own understanding about TA NA E KA, she says that to try to comfort Mary.

The family members bring potential and positive influences to each other for them to follow and copy. In the book The Pigman and Me, Paul was revenged by John because he hit John with a paddle and gave him a black eye. John was furious so he wanted revenge on Paul. After John revenged Paul, Moose thought that was not enough of a hit. So, when he was going to hit Paul on the ground Paul’s sister came and pushed Moose away. She also threw Moose miles away. She did this to protect her brother and to let other kids leave Paul alone. She wants the other kids to know that if they hit her brother again, they would have the save result at Moose. That was a potential influence that his sister brought to the family. Next, in the book The Goodness of Matt Kaizer, her mother brings flowers to Matt’s sick aunt. Matt saw her mother doing that, so he observed it and then copied it. He also bought some flowers before he went to see Mary Beth’s father. Although he always said to others that he was a bad boy, giving flowers to sick people was a family influence from his family so he did it. Last, in the book TA NA E KA, when Mary was talking to Ernie, she told Ernie that TA NA E KA was a boring and no use event, but when Ernie said that too, Mary was frustrated. She think that TA NA E KA was a serious event and test. She suddenly think that was because her grandpa told her all about it. That was also a family influence.

Family members will use different ways that we could accept to guard and care for each other.  In the book The Pigman and Me, Nonno Frankie and Paul's sister teach face to face instead of boring talking / educating. They were not like the teacher, they were more like friends to Paul. Nonno Frankie just told him in a fun way of how to fight in a battle with another boy. Nonno Frankie made many  examples about it. He sometimes told Paul that John may have the spirit of an Italian warrior, so he should be aware of him because an Italian warrior is able to kill someone with a yo-yo. Because once a warrior killed thousands of people by himself in a short time. His sister also teaches him to protect himself during problems. Instead of boring talking, she just pushed and threw Moose miles away to protect Paul. Then, in the book The Goodness of Matt Kiazer Matt’s father dared Matt to do goodness. Matt would never refuse a dare. So, his father used Matt’s way to persuade him to do goodness and knew that he was good deeply inside. Matt never refuses a dare so his father used that way to let him go to see Mary Beth’s father. Matt accepted the dare from his father. At last, in the book TA NA E KA, Mary’s grandfather admits why they had to memorize the old life and the spirit of Kaw people. His grandfather didn’t blame him, instead of teaching her in a boring way, his grandfather told her that before there were often soldiers that suddenly came to attack. So, they always have to be prepared. He also admits that the berries were bad and relieved that he ate a dead deer on the first day to keep him full.

In total, these stories make positive influences on each other, they also show a sense of caring and love to each other in the family and they use the ways that their family members could accept to guard and care for them. When they make positive influences on each other, the others will copy from their family members to do the same good thing. Paul’s sister threw Moose away from Paul to tell her brother that when his sister was not beside him, he also had to learn to protect and care for himself. Matt’s mother brought flowers to Matt’s sick aunt before. Matt saw it. He copied it. He remembered it. His father cares and loves Matt by always telling him things one by one in Matt’s way. Matt’s father dared Matt to do goodness. Because Matt always accepts dares. Mary’s grandpa tells all of the traditions of Kaw people to Mary. She remembered it and took it seriously at last. His grandpa didn’t quarrel with her about why they had the ceremony test. He admits that the berries were bad to let Mary accept it more. Mary’s mother cared and loved Mary, she told Mary her thoughts about the TA NA E KA. In these three books, the main characters all have a new look or thought about something because of the influences from their family.
