About Discrimination

Discrimination is something that happens all around the world, and it's not a good thing. Discrimination is the act of treating someone a certain way because of their background. There are many different forms of discrimination, and different ones can be shown in the following stories; The Scribe, Madame C. J. Walker, and Primary Lessons. The Scribe is about a boy named James who helps the illiterate people in his neighborhood, who were being used for money as they didn’t know how to read. Madame C. J. Walker is a biography of how she built her own business although she was living in very racist conditions, then becoming a millionaire. Then Primary Lessons is about a little girl named Judith who goes to school in Puerto Rico for the first time and learns about discrimination.

Discrimination on poverty is one of the more common forms of discrimination. From the name you can tell this form of discrimination is directed to people with not much money who are living in poverty. In The Scribe, most of the people in Jame’s neighborhood are illiterate meaning they can’t read or write. Because of this, the Silver Dollar Check & Cashing Service is scamming the people who are illiterate. The illiterate people used to live in poverty as a child so they weren’t able to afford to go to school, now they are being scammed. In Primary Lessons, it's plainly displayed in front of the reader’s eyes. Judith states in the story that she quickly earned the respect of the teachers without much work. She also points out that a poor boy named Lorenzo had to work hard to gain attention unlike Judith, who was wealthy.

Discrimination on race is the most known form of discrimination around the world as it was a big part of the late 1800s and early 1900s. Racial discrimination is the form of discrimination when a person is judged by their skin color. Most of the time this is directed to African American for their dark skin color, but sometimes others, such as the Chinese, who were discriminated against for their more yellow shade of skin. Racial discrimination is also shown in Primary Lessons, as stated before, Lorenzo works hard for attention unlike Judith. Judith gets her attention for her wealth, but for Lorenzo he has more trouble gaining attention because he is poor, and also because of his skin color. He was an African American boy, Judith was a white American girl. Unlike Judith, Lorenzo had to work hard because the teachers didn’t really appreciate him in the first place for his skin color. It was the same with Madame C. J. Walker, it was harder for her to find a good job that made good money, this was because of racism. Racism was still a thing back then so she had to work harder to make money

Another common form of discrimination is gender discrimination where a person is treated differently simply because they are a male or a female. Most of the time this is directed to females because back then, only men could work while women stayed at home and did housework. Because women couldn’t contribute to the community much, it was seen that men were stronger and had more capabilities than women. For example, back then women couldn’t go to work, join the army, vote, etc. Gender discrimination is also shown in Madame C. J. Walker’s biography. Since she was a lady, she couldn’t get a job at a business (this is also because she was African American), the best job she got was a job at a laundromat. This job paid worse than the African American job for men which made making money even more harder than it already was.

There are many different forms of discrimination some of the more common ones include poverty, racist, and gender discrimination. These 3 can be seen displayed in The Scribe, Madame C. J. Walker, and Primary Lessons, you can also see them in other stories. Discrimination of poverty can be seen in all 3. For example, people who used to live in poverty couldn’t afford education. So the people in James' neighborhood were forced to pay extreme prices just to have a document read, or paper signed, they weren’t treated so nicely either. Racism, racist discrimination, can be seen in both Primary Lessons and Madame C. J. Walker. In Primary Lessons, a white girl, Judith, from America just came to this new school in Puerto Rico and without doing much, she gains affection. But when compared to this other African American boy named Lorenzo, Lorenzo had to work hard for appreciation unlike Judith. In Madame C. J. Walker, it shows us racial and gender discrimination, because she was an African American woman, she had worse jobs than an American person, and even worse jobs because she was an African American woman. Any form of discrimination should not be tolerated as it is a very bad thing, it makes life harder for people and its unfair.
